It most certainly is not a factor. 
We all have to start somewhere, eh? Two years ago, I couldn't draw worth anything, and now I'm...uh, better. 
Wouldn't call it phenomenal, but being around and involved with other artists really opened me up to some very effective contructive criticism and I've greatly improved since. So if improvement is what you're looking for, joining a club is your best bet, because I'm sure there's people around who will be more than willing to give you a hand, especially if it's a matter of feeling sheepish.
So if you're willing to join, we're more than willing to have you!
